THE artist who gave the Harry Potter book covers their magic is among the speakers for this year’s Spring Fling lecture series.

Clare Melinsky, who created a series of cover illustrations for the adventures of the boy wizard, is among the sparkling line-up who will discuss everything from the landscapes in art to sustainability.

On Wednesday, May 2, the event looks at sustainability and the speakers will include Clare who will be joined by visual artist Hope London and glass artist Amanda Simmons.

Clare said: “Before this I hadn’t really thought about sustainability in connection to my work but actually my whole practice is very sustainable.

“I work from home, I don’t commute. I have an agent in London who represents me so I don’t need to travel. And I use materials which are sustainable: the linoleum that I use for my lino cuts is made in Scotland; it comes from Kirkcaldy and is environmentally-friendly.”

Drama lovers may also be familiar with Clare’s work as she was commissioned to create 40 lino cut illustrations for the covers of the new Penguin Shakespeare book covers.

In addition to book covers, she has also created postage stamps for Royal Mail and her work has featured in numerous magazines and newspapers as well as in adverts.

Fellow speaker Hope London trained as a lawyer in New York and has used her expertise to create the graphic novel M Contraband Esq, Punk Lawyer as a medium for expressing ideas on copyright and contract laws.

The event takes place in the University of Glasgow’s Dumfries campus at the Rutherford McCowan Building from 6pm to 7.30pm.
