Spring Fling x
Wigtown Book Festival

Writer-in-Residence 2019

We are delighted that the Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Residency returned for 2019. Poet Ken Cockburn invites you to explore the links between birds, art and the landscape in which it is made. Ken travelled the Spring Fling studios talking to makers and visitors alike, holding workshops and creating new work to be revealed for Wigtown Book Festival (27 September – 1 October 2019). Find out more about Ken Cockburn and the residency here.

Throughout Spring Fling weekend, Ken held workshops and readings at a range of studios across the region:

Saturday 25 May 2019
11am – 12noon / Studio 73 Alison Proudlock, Gatelawbridge (Green Route) – short bird-themed poetry readings
3 – 4pm / Studio 39 Jo Gallant, Mossdale (Pink Route) – workshop
Sunday 26 May 2019
11am – 12noon  / Studio 68 Deborah Campbell, Dumfries (Orange Route) – workshop
Monday 27 May 2019
11am – 12noon  / Studio 09 Sarah Stewart, Wigtown (Blue Route) – workshop
In the workshops, Ken and attendees explored writing about the birds we see and hear around us through the year, in town and country. Suitable for all ages and levels of experience. Children (with parent / carer) welcome.
Ken was at all the venues either side of the events for informal conversations.

On Saturday I saw a curlew flying across the moorland.

Last week in the South Lakes I saw a heron wading.

Today in the art gallery we saw a pile of taxidermied kingfishers.
