Every year, our studios present a huge range of high quality art and craft as well as unique hands-on experiences. Over and above this, we try to widen the offering and encourage visitors to the region to stay a little longer and take in what the region has to offer. We also aim to excite and inspire with alternative experiences and further opportunities to learn directly from our artists and makers.

Spring Fling Tours
As usual, we are working with Thornhill Community Transport and Cairn Valley Community Transport to deliver some tours across the region. We’ve also teamed up with the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere to offer a unique hosted bus tour through the Glenkens incorporating studio visits. Look out for bike and e-bike hire too!
Supported by Cavens Country House, Kirkbean, the Spring Fling Prize Draw offers visitors the chance to win vouchers to spend in the studios on high quality visual art and craft, plus luxury accommodation and fine dining!
Friends of Spring Fling can get exclusive discounts when booking in advance. Visit their website here.
Spotlight on Food & Drink
In our brochure we’ll be featuring a handful of food and drink providers from across Dumfries and Galloway that are doing something special this Spring Fling.
Why not add some local cuisine, a tour or a demonstration to your Spring Fling this year?
Across the Sea:
The North Channel
Upland and Island Arts Centre in Lisburn are pleased to present a new exhibition partnership for 2020. This exhibition brings together artists and makers taking part in Spring Fling Open Studios in Dumfries and Galloway and a handful of artists and makers living and working in Northern Ireland.
Modern Makers Exhibition
This year marks the fifth year of the Modern Makers programme, which gives young people from Dumfries and Galloway a chance to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills. The exhibition takes a look back at the programme’s origins with a focus on the last five years, showcasing work from both participants and lead makers.
Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival
We are delighted that the Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Residency returned for the 2019/2020 events with Emily Tough as our Artist.
This time the residency was for emerging artists and we changed the outcome from creating an open studio at Spring Fling to a final exhibition.
Emerge is a 9 month programme of mentoring with a bursary of £1,000 for early career artists and makers with a connection to Dumfries & Galloway. This year, we have awarded three Emerge bursaries which will see each recipient paired up with experienced Upland artists and makers.
Spring Fling App
We’re delighted to be presenting a brand new Spring Fling app for the 2020 event! Supported and delivered by CodeArcs, the new app is an essential companion to have with you on your Spring Fling visit.
DG Arts Festival
Dumfries & Galloway has a fantastic line-up of award-winning international, national and regional artists performing comedy, dance, theatre, music and spoken word, with some of the key highlights taking place alongside Spring Fling across our region.
We know that for some, taking children into studios with breakable objects is a bit daunting so this year we’re pulling together information on some family friendly studios and activities at this year’s Spring Fling Open Studios.
Some studios will open on Friday (6pm – 8pm) and late on Saturday or Sunday (until 8pm).
All studios are open Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th and Monday 25th (studios aren’t open during the day on the Friday).
The 2020 brochure will be available from late March onwards.
