I use laminated wood veneers to make wooden mobiles. I’m often inspired by a poem, but the pieces change as I make them. I enjoy hinting at shapes and combining images; flames become feathers, birds become fish parts. The movement is also a vital consideration.
This is a very difficult time but it has given me a chance to take an artistic risk. Autumn Dancer is the most ambitious project I’ve tackled so far. Inspired by the last line of a Jackie Kay poem Two Autumns, it has been a very long time in gestation. This is a long way from finished but the photo gives an idea of where it is at the moment. There’s a lot of adjustment to be made to what’s here and I’ll be adding legs and possibly hands and feet. Being able to throw away or completely redo elements that I’m unhappy with is a real advantage.
