Alistair Hamilton

Photography • Purple Route

I use photography to explore pattern, detail and texture in the natural and human-made environment. My subjects are often things in plain sight that many people overlook. I want my work to give others an idea of how I see the world.

My Practice

The most important technique I use is observation – continually looking at the world around me.

I use photographic techniques to create work that is varied but is seldom a simple photograph of something. My work is not representational; it consists of images in their own right.

I start with an image captured in a camera. This is not an end product: the processing I do later in my studio is as important as what I do with a camera.

Tools & Materials

I do not use my studio for taking photographs; it is where I make camera images into finished pieces. There, I use a computer, large monitors, a printer, and software to visualise and process images.

I have a pigment ink-jet printer to make the final pieces, using archival ink and paper. My paper is from manufacturers (Canson, Hahnemühle) who have been supplying artists for centuries.

Spring Fling Activity

I can show visitors how I work with images in the studio, giving demonstrations of the way I process digital images to create final printed work. Time permitting, I can make prints for visitors on request.

I often work with a limited palette of desaturated colours. However, I have decided to produce some work that is brighter and more upbeat that I hope people will find uplifting.
