About My Practice
Most recently I’ve moved into mixed media and collage work – in a slightly looser style. I build up multiple layers of paint and collage, mixing in acrylic, charcoal, inks and oil pastels. The collage papers are varied including old newspaper cuttings, music scores, french vintage ephemera and cut up pieces of my sketches. Some of it is totally obscured by subsequent layers but bits of most of it show through to an extent. I’m still drawn to fishing boats and harbours – inspired by the bustling Kirkcudbright harbour with its scallop dredgers and whelk boats. There’s always something colourful to see – the more weathered the better.
Although I do some sketching outdoors and take photos for reference material, most of my work is done in the studio. I generally work at my easel – this allows me to step back frequently to see how the paintings look at a distance – and it’s good when I want to let the paint run and drip to see where it takes the work. For fine detail I sometimes put the painting on a table – but I try to limit this as I find that easel working is best for spontaneity and vibrancy.
Tools & Materials
My painting material is acrylic – but in most of my works you'll also find charcoal, oil pastel, acrylic inks and collage papers.
