Joanna Shennan

I am interested in the passage of time and how seasonal change is reflected in natural forms observed through walking, exploring, close observation and collecting things, recording them with an awareness that they could disappear or quickly change, never to return. This absorption in the natural world brings a sense of calm contentment which I aim to translate into my work. I connect to individual places and focus on the detail from them. This close focusing has fed into printing with natural materials, stencilling, stitching onto fabric and papers well as casting with plaster resulting in both 2D and 3D forms and artists books.

About My Practice

Seasonal change, shadows, textures, patterns and shapes found in nature are reflected through my own interpretation within experimental mixed media samples and sketchbooks. My ideas develop and I produce work using textiles, paper and plaster arranged in both 2D and 3D forms.

Tools & Materials

I print fabrics and papers using a geli plate and combine printed designs into abstract compositions which I work into with both machine and hand embroidery. I cast natural forms within plaster and combine these with textile panels focussing on texture as well as pattern and colour and create 3D and 2D artworks. This year I have been exploring dissolvable fabric and other mixed media processes to combine within my work.
