Maggie Ayres
I am a mixed-media artist based in Kirkcudbright, predominantly focused on painting and drawing.
My abstract work is driven by my own mental health and my connection to the land and humanity.
I aim to express a personal, emotional response to experience and the land against a socio-political background, both visually and through my writing.

About My Practice
I paint mainly in oils and watercolours after fairly loose explorative sketchbook drawing, mainly in graphite and inks alongside expressive writing.
I am also exploring new processes making pigments from locally-sourced soil and rock which I am slowly incorporating into my practice.
I have a strong desire to get my hands in the dirt beneath my feet…
Tools & Materials
On any day there are traditional oil paints, beeswax and brushes on my table. Palette knives, scrapers, twigs, stones, sandpaper, tissue paper…
Now I am excited to add my own burnt charcoal and handmade inks and pigments too.
A box of found rusty metal parts is always to hand to add beautiful marks and colour.
I work on boards and paper and cloth.
