Martha Schofield

My work is whimsical, colourful and playful, often inspired by daily life and big sky colours. I find comfort in my creative practice, particularly through continuous line work which is the foundation of my practice. I also create 3D assembled pieces, led by an invented narrative from found items.

About My Practice

I document my creative practice in sketchbooks, recording thoughts, colour palettes, observational drawings, imagined drawings, patterns and experiments with collage. I particularly enjoy continuous line (continuous flow line) drawing as it’s so meditative.

Sketches are then developed into finished collage pieces or monoprints using mixed media and my own printed papers.

Both collage and monoprint, allow me to build on an initial study in a free but considered way. In a finished piece, composition and balanced colours are very important to me.

Inspiration for my key colours comes from the big skies, sunrises and sunsets I see everyday. Colour and process unites all of my current work. I draw things from my daily life or patterns and shapes I’m familiar with and that I see repeating in my sketchbook. I find inspiration in things around me, nostalgic pieces and contemporary artists.

Recently I've been creating small sketchbooks from my archive of collected, found, new and recycled papers. I find making something practical and useful very mindful and a real benefit to my creative practice.

Tools & Materials

I use a wide range of media including watercolour, charcoal, acrylic, pencil, pastel, Gelli plates and a mixture of papers. My assemblages use many of the same material plus the additional found items. I also use book-binding tools such as awls, bone folders and a selection of threads.
