Rebecca McLellan / Chocflock

My work celebrates and champions the fleece of native Dumfries & Galloway rare-breed Castlemilk Moorit sheep. Through my work I aim to keep traditions alive, working with small mills to spin our yarn, weaving individual scarves and creating bespoke fabric designs. I aim to share the excitement of creating in limited quantities something individual that is a unique combination of materials and inspiration. The constant thread running through all that I do is a love and respect for our sheep and the beautiful textiles created from their sustainable fibre for practical and decorative use.

About My Practice

My designs feature a combination of traditional patterns in weaving, knitting and needlepoint tapestry pieces, worked in a limited range of earthy vintage colours that reflect the natural hues of the landscape surrounding our small farm on the Solway coast at Rockcliffe.

Tools & Materials

All my products are made from pure wool, blending the mocha-coloured fleeces of my pedigree flock (and others), and native Shetland or Bluefaced Leicester fibre with a known provenance back to the source flocks and farms in Scotland and Wales. Textiles are woven by hand and foot either by me on-site, using two different table-top looms or off-site by two artisan weavers in Buckie and Duns.

Spring Fling Activity

In addition to the creations in the workshop it is possible to see my small flock of rare breed Castlemilk Moorit sheep in their fields.
The wool store will also be open and visitors will be able to see and handle in-the-grease fleece in the process of being sorted and cleaned ahead of the first stage of processing by the mill.
There will be a needlepoint tapestry available for visitors to stop and add a few stitches if they choose, with help and guidance available.
To share the creative experience, alongside my handwoven scarves, throws and wraps I am selling Chocflock yarn, knitting kits, pure Castlemilk Moorit wool rovings (for home spinning), large and small needlepoint tapestry kits, plus other sheep-themed items.
