Richard Foster

The everyday aspects of the northern landscape and the trees and vegetation shaped by the northern climate are a constant theme of my work. I also celebrate the energy of plants in a series of works inspired by my allotment and garden. These prints are not botanical studies but seek to explore regeneration and growth. My latest work explores Neolithic monuments – standing stones, cairns and rock art. I strip away context and location to focus on the sheer mass and volume of these monuments, and embossing depicts the carved symbols associated with these monuments.
I am currently exploring the painterly, softer quality of drypoint in contrast to the more linear mark-making of etching.

About My Practice

I revel in the challenges and possibilities of working in black and white. How to capture the play of light and the textures of rock, wood and water through a single colour and the white of the paper.
My work is detailed, figurative and references the British printmakers of the early 20th century: Clare Leighton, Charles Tunnicliffe and Eric Ravilious.
I work from a home studio but print at Iron Press Studio in Lancaster where the community of printmakers provides inspiration and technical advice.

Tools & Materials

I create etchings using a polished copper plate onto which I apply a wax "resist". By drawing into the "resist" with a fine needle I expose the metal. In a bath of acid, the exposed lines are "bitten" into the plate. I cover the plate in ink and then wipe away to leave the ink in the grooves created by the acid. When passed through a printing press, under immense pressure, the ink is pulled out of the grooves onto dampened paper, creating a print.
Drypoint uses the same printing method but instead of using acid I draw directly onto the plate. Traditionally drypoint creates soft, smoky lines but by using a plastic plate I generate a sharper line and a more detailed image.
In all cases, how the plate is inked and the amount of ink left on the plate is key to how the image finally appears and results in each print being unique.
Currently I'm creating plates textured with glue that embosses the paper into raised textures when the plate is passed through the press and hint at the mystery of the symbols associated with Neolithic monuments.
