About My Practice

Recently my work has been influenced by artefacts of ancient belief systems and esoteric practices found along the Scottish coastlines, many of which are shrouded in mystery and myth. The natural world also provides much inspiration, particularly in phenomenal patterns and repeating forms created by waves on sand, erosion of stone and cliffs from the elements, and divine compositions of plants and fauna. I have also been reading and exploring concepts from contemporary physics, applying theories around place, objecthood and observation to the found imagery from Scottish artefacts and landscapes to explore how the context of these images and objects evolve.

Alongside painting and the works shown over the weekend, I also have been collaborating with the University of Glasgow's Physics and Astronomy department to create a multi-sensory audio-visual sculpture that explores ideas surrounding contemporary Physics. The piece is available to view on my website, and will soon be on permanent display in the university's Kelvin Building. The piece works be using cosmic radiation detection equipment to trigger lights and sounds, creating a tangible, audible conversation with the otherwise invisible activities of the universe. By chance, the venue I'm using for my open studio was once the home of one of the most influential physicists, James Clerk Maxwell, responsible for the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation.

Tools & Materials

My practice is largely based in oil painting, although I do also practice a variety of printmaking techniques such as screen printing, lino printing and lithography. In the last two years I have also been exploring kinetic sculpture and installation making.

Spring Fling Activity

I will be demonstrating my methods of painting, drawing or printmaking over the weekend, and may have some interactive sculptural work on display for visitors to explore. Visitors are also welcome to flick through sketchbooks and developmental works, as well as the source material which inspires my making.

There will be music, tastings, cocktails and street food available from 12pm – 8pm Saturday and 12pm – 3pm Sunday-Monday, provided by Demijohn.
