Sally Jennings
I am a Glasgow-based painter, creating works that play on our nuanced experiences and draw attention to the otherwise ignored or unseen underlying forces that shape our understanding of the world. By layering colour, obscuring imagery, and creating textured surfaces, I aim to create works that offer a space for introspection, and connection with the material and metaphysical elements of our existence.

About My Practice
Drawing inspiration from spiritual, esoteric, and religious belief systems, I incorporate symbols and shapes that are removed from their original context and recontextualised alongside seemingly arbitrary forms, giving them new significance within this juxtaposition. Many of the abstract forms in my work are derived from natural imagery such as stars and astrological patterns, tidal shorelines and rock formations. I employ a process of layering color, obscuring imagery, and creating texturally rich surfaces to enhance the depth and complexity of each piece, inviting viewers to uncover meaning and to engage with the work on multiple sensory levels. These influences converge to create pieces that explore themes of temporality, the varied paths we take in seeking knowledge of the world, and the spiritually significant moments that emerge in the everyday.
Tools & Materials
I work with oil paints to create paintings of various sizes, predominantly on canvas and also wood panels. These works pay rigorous attention to the formal elements of a surface such as colour, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale, to generate emotive surfaces. By working in a non-figurative format, the works can question the nature of objects, materiality, as well as their spatial and temporal prominence.
