Stephanie Lightbown
My artwork captures the beauty of seaweed and the textures of tidal lines—natural boundaries marked by the ocean’s highest reach and composed of seaweed, driftwood, and debris. Using textiles, bookbinding, and mixed media, I create carefully crafted, multi-layered abstract artworks presented in box frames, exploring nature’s complexity and the ecological stories of the coastline.

About My Practice
I deconstruct photography, reassembling fragments into layered, textured surfaces that evoke the complexity of the natural world. Through techniques such as digital design, laser cutting, and material manipulation, I create abstract works that celebrate the beauty and intricacy of the coastline. Working from my rural studio near the shoreline, I incorporate found objects gathered during walks, embedding a strong sense of place into each piece. My box art and assemblages are explorations of abstraction, capturing the essence of nature through layered investigations.
Tools & Materials
As a multidisciplinary artist, I utilise a diverse range of tools and materials to bring my creations to life. Traditional techniques such as bookbinding and embroidery are combined with modern technologies like laser cutting and a heat press, which I use to design and create fabrics that are then further embellished. Photography plays a vital role in my work, often incorporated into my pieces to add depth and narrative, bridging the gap between digital precision and handcrafted artistry.
