Painting & Drawing / Mixed Media / Printmaking • Orange Route

I seek to convey the essence of place particularly experienced in the early morning half-light or late evening. Paintings and prints are developed in oil and mixed media, drypoint, monoprint and carborundum.

My Practice

Before beginning a new body of work, I walk in and observe my chosen landscape. This is an intense period of observation and reflection before final ideas are formulated and paintings, drawings and prints begin. In this way I can observe a landscape and its elements in its many moods; how it is affected by weather patterns, and the seasons, aiming to capture something of the particular atmosphere of each site in the final work.

Tools & Materials

My studio in the beautiful Crichton grounds is in an historic building which was previously part of the Royal Crichton Farm. In 2013 I founded and now lead the studio co-operative here, currently comprising twelve artists and makers working across a variety of disciplines.

I work primarily in oils on canvas but also use mixed media and make reed-pen and ink drawings. I make intaglio prints and enjoy the carborundum printing process for the rich, velvety effects it produces.
