William Spurway

My work remains of the landscape but currently focuses on aspects that catch my eye when out walking: magnificent oaks, a grey mare in a field, bulls on a hillside, shape-shifting clouds. Pieces include pen and ink drawings made in situ to large-scale oils. Also on display, will be works in progress, sketchbooks, objects gathered on walks and the tools of my trade.

About My Practice

Before beginning a new body of work, I walk in and observe my chosen landscape and subjects in the landscape. This is an intense period of observation and reflection before final ideas are formulated and paintings, drawings and prints begun.
I have been teaching the HNC and HND in painting, drawing at Dumfries & Galloway College for the last eighteen years which is an integral part of my practice, enabling me not only to pass on my skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject but also requires me to re-visit and experiment with theories and practices which in turn feeds back into my own practice.

Tools & Materials

As well as oil and mixed media painting, I use contrasting techniques in printmaking: drypoint, monoprint, ink resist and carborundum to portray the movement of water and the flicker of reflected light.
