About My Practice
My practice involves manipulating prepared/stiffened fabric into lifelike ,and sometimes imaginative , floral projects . I mainly use different types of silk but have experimented with other fabrics incuding vintage and reclaimed kimono and sari materials . I sometimes combine this with embroidery and beadwork to create wall art . Recently I have been experimenting with this media to produce images stitched on linen , for example bouquets and portraits .
Tools & Materials
I use silk flower making tools which have different shapes to them. And when heated on an electric plate , create a wide variety of curls , folds and depressions into fabric mimicking real flowers and foliage .
Materials consist of silk fabrics dyed or painted using fabric fabric dyes and standard paints and inks .
Stems are bound in silk floss and floristry wire creates stamens and support in larger petals and leaves .
I handmake stamens using either cold porcelain or paperclay medium .
