SF Weekend Activity
This weekend would have been Spring Fling weekend! We’re really sad we can’t welcome you to Dumfries & Galloway and into the studios of our artists and makers. However, lots of our Participants have planned some exciting activity to give you a snapshot of their studios!
Check out some of the weekend activity below and also the updates on our Studio pages. These activities will largely take place on the artist’s own website and social media platform so make sure you don’t miss out by following their social media accounts.
Studio 3 Glenda Waterworth: I will be sharing new work, videos, blog posts and sketchbooks on my website and social media platforms throughout the Spring Fling weekend and will be available to answer questions and chat with visitors via phone, email and FB messenger. I will be preparing a video showing the studio, works on display and beautiful views, to give visitors a taste of what they would see if they were actually here themselves.
Studio 8 Sarah Stewart: On Saturday 23rd May at 4pm, printmaker Sarah Stewart will be hosting a behind the scenes tour of her studio in Wigtown. This live event will take place on Instagram Stories @sarahmakesprints and later shared on her Facebook (@SarahMakesPrint) and YouTube (Sarah Stewart Printmaker) channels. She will share her artistic journey, inspirations and give a little insight into her printmaking processes. Questions are welcome during the live event or can be forwarded in advance by email to sarahlstewart@live.com This event will be accompanied by a “LIVE PRINTING” taking place throughout the weekend. Keep an eye across all three of Sarah’s channels throughout the weekend to watch snippets of her process as she creates a new print from start to finish.
Emily Tough, Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Artist-in-Residence, I will be doing a live stream of the sculpture at 4pm on Sunday 24th May on my social media – more information coming soon!
Studio 20 Izzy Leach: In preparation for what would have been Spring Fling weekend, I will make prints using alternative processes such as cyanotypes that I can create from home. Over the month of May, I also plan to record video tutorials to be shared online, covering topics such as the cyanotype process, 35mm/120mm camera operation and explaining some of the ways I’ve built narrative through photography.
Studio 22 Laura Derby: I’ve added prints for sale of rugs I’ve made to my website shop, there’s a couple of rugs and little stools on there for sale and I intend to send out my first newsletter of a blog kindly written about me my last Spring Fling weekend for the intended weekend this year. I will also send a photo of the little round rug Spring Flingers had a go at making when at my studio, splendidly complete and looking great!! link to my shop is https://www.rugaura.com/rug-shop
Studio 23 Alison Corfield: I am planning to start a new series of small stitched pieces, so by the Spring Fling weekend there should (hopefully) be new textile art work on my website and Instagram.
Studio 29 Catherine Coulson: For the 23rd May I am launching an online shop with special Spring Fling discounts and new artwork added for the weekend. I have set up a chatroom and will be available online and via email on the weekend and after, so please head over and say hello. My website will be updated for visitors to explore as a virtual studio, showing the process behind making my art and sharing my surroundings, inspirations and experiments in a new blog.
Studio 39 Angela Lawrence: For a “Spring Fling Thing” I was also intending to present 10 paintings of Sandgreen, experimenting in different styles: I will now put these online over Spring Fling. My usually popular Spring Fling bargain rack is out of bounds until I can reopen, so I’m going to have a SPECIAL SALE of paintings and sketches on my facebook page and website – prices starting from £5 and all sale items less than half price – so do look out for that! Hope to see you all soon.

Friday 22nd Films of the powder work and fused piece, Sat 23rd images of the inspiration and fusing for background and then a film on setting up slump and shots of the slump whilst hot, Sunday 24th montage to cover the piece so far and then films on the coldworking of the piece and finally on Monday 25th Images and blog of the finished piece. See you then!
Studio 59 Julie Hollis: Despite not being able to welcome visitors to Cloud 9 on Spring Fling weekend, I am hoping to offer online activities. These are very much still at the planning stage but will be revealed on my website once I have finalised them. Think along the theme of paint-a-longs and you won’t be far away
Studio 64 Tricia Barna: The Falu Studios website continues to have our art available for sale and we intend to offer visitors to the site a virtual exhibition of our own artwork alongside visiting artists’ work during the original Spring Fling weekend. Friends of Spring Fling will still be able to benefit from a 10% discount on all purchases via the website during this time and we will be running online competitions for site visitors.
Studio 71 Deborah Campbell: On the weekend of The Spring Fling I was due to exhibit at Thomas Tosh in Thornhill, a fabulous venue that features a café, gift & book department and gallery. Due to the current circumstances Thomas Tosh are now planning a virtual exhibition that weekend and will be showing my textile work alongside paintings by Scottish Artist Emma Visca.
