Spring Fling 2020 Rescheduled

Every year, we aim to excite and inspire with alternative experiences and further opportunities to learn directly from our artists and makers. We are pleased to bring you a suite of activities for the rescheduled event this October.

The event will take place from 5-12 October 2020.
It will take place online with an extensive digital programme open to all audiences. We are delighted to present Virtual Studios for the first time which will allow you to virtually enter around 80 studios right here on the website, with the aim of replicating the ‘studio’ as much as we can. These will go live with the launch of this year’s event.

Virtual Studios

We are pleased to present Spring Fling’s Virtual Studios! Enter the studio to see how work is made, with new insights into the studios and specially commissioned videos.
These studio pages will go live on Monday 5th October when the rescheduled event begins.

Looking In

A series of non-digital, non-contact window exhibitions across the region which will allow people to see work without visiting a studio or going online.

For more information on what venues are involved and who is exhibiting, click here.

Online Workshops

We are delighted to bring you more online workshops this October which will be delivered by Kim Ayres and Izzy Leach.

Kim’s Photography Workshops will take place live on Facebook spanning 4 days during the rescheduled event, with a group for workshop attendees to share work and results from set challenges.
Izzy will present a Kind of Blue, a cyanotype workshop which is a beginner friendly way to photographically print from home with limited equipment.

Find out more here.

Open Studios & COVID-19

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, many studios that were in participant’s homes were unable to open. With the rising number of cases both in and out with the region, Upland made the difficult decision to not promote open any studios as part of the event. Read our full statement here.

Some studios may be able to open since they are not restricted by the current COVID-19 guidelines. They will be doing so independently of the event. Information on this will be on their own business websites.

Spring Fling Prize Draw

We are delighted to be able to bring the Spring Fling Prize Draw to you again this October. Supported by Cavens Country House, the prize draw gives audiences the chance to win money to spend at the studio of your choice and also an overnight stay with dinner for 2 at the boutique country house near Dumfries.

Information on how to enter the draw will be released with the launch of the rescheduled event on the 5th of October.

SF Brochure & Print

Keep your eyes peeled for new leaflets winging their way across D&G with updates on the rescheduled event. Sadly our lovely brochures now have lots of incorrect information since we had to postpone the event so we won’t be using them to promote attending the event. They still have lots of invaluable information on the Artists and Makers taking part in the event and others from the region so please use them as a directory alongside our rescheduled event information.

Our D&G

This scheme developed this year from our long-standing scheme Whilst in D&G. This was a response to Covid-19 and a desire to promote and support as many D&G businesses as possible, to residents as well as future visitors.
We are pleased to keep this going and invite businesses to get involved!

OUR D&G

Spotlight on D&G

This year we wanted to bring more to Spring Fling audiences so we launched a Spotlight on D&G. This feature showcases a range of events and offers from The Station House Cookery School and Ninefold Distillery.

Information on what’s on offer will be announced soon.

Emerge

Emerge is a 9 month programme of mentoring with a bursary of £1000 for early career artists and makers with a connection to Dumfries & Galloway.

This year we have awarded three Emerge bursaries which will see each recipient paired up with an experienced Upland artist or maker.  As well as creating new work and taking part in Spring Fling the recipients also benefit from go & see trips and networking opportunities.

More information coming soon.

Arts Live

We are pleased to extend our partnership with Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival by promoting their Arts Live programme this autumn. Find out what live events are on by visiting the Arts Live website here.

Wigtown Book Festival 2020

Wigtown Book Festival takes place online this year from 24 September till 4th October. We are delighted to develop our partnership for another year via our Looking In window exhibition at Number 11 and through exhibitions at the book festival with Spring Fling participants and Upland members.

Their whole programme is online now. Find out what they have in store by visiting their website here.

Upland Film Week

This Spring Fling we are taking the time to celebrate past projects by presenting a series of Upland commissioned films. Upland CIC turns 5 this October so there isn’t a better time to look back at some of our activities over the past few years. Join us on the 5th of October.

Spring Fling Tours

As usual, we are working with Thornhill Community Transport and Cairn Valley Community Transport to deliver some tours across the region. We’ve also teamed up with the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere to offer a unique hosted bus tour through the Glenkens incorporating studio visits. Look out for bike and e-bike hire too!

Prize Draw

Supported by Cavens Country House, Kirkbean, the Spring Fling Prize Draw offers visitors the chance to win vouchers to spend in the studios on high quality visual art and craft, plus luxury accommodation and fine dining!
Friends of Spring Fling can get exclusive discounts when booking in advance. Visit their website here.

Spotlight on Food & Drink

In our brochure we’ll be featuring a handful of food and drink providers from across Dumfries and Galloway that are doing something special this Spring Fling.

Why not add some local cuisine, a tour or a demonstration to your Spring Fling this year?

Across the Sea:
The North Channel

Upland and Island Arts Centre in Lisburn are pleased to present a new exhibition partnership for 2020. This exhibition brings together artists and makers taking part in Spring Fling Open Studios in Dumfries and Galloway and a handful of artists and makers living and working in Northern Ireland.

Modern Makers Exhibition

This year marks the fifth year of the Modern Makers programme, which gives young people from Dumfries and Galloway a chance to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills. The exhibition takes a look back at the programme’s origins with a focus on the last five years, showcasing work from both participants and lead makers.

Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival

We are delighted that the Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Residency returned for the 2019/2020 events with Emily Tough as our Artist.

This time the residency was for emerging artists and we changed the outcome from creating an open studio at Spring Fling to a final exhibition.

Emerge

Emerge is a 9 month programme of mentoring with a bursary of £1,000 for early career artists and makers with a connection to Dumfries & Galloway. This year, we have awarded three Emerge bursaries which will see each recipient paired up with experienced Upland artists and makers.

Spring Fling App

We’re delighted to be presenting a brand new Spring Fling app for the 2020 event! Supported and delivered by CodeArcs, the new app is an essential companion to have with you on your Spring Fling visit.

DG Arts Festival

Dumfries & Galloway has a fantastic line-up of award-winning international, national and regional artists performing comedy, dance, theatre, music and spoken word, with some of the key highlights taking place alongside Spring Fling across our region.

Family Friendly

We know that for some, taking children into studios with breakable objects is a bit daunting so this year we’re pulling together information on some family friendly studios and activities at this year’s Spring Fling Open Studios.

Evening Openings

Some studios will open on Friday (6pm – 8pm) and late on Saturday or Sunday (until 8pm).

All studios are open Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th and Monday 25th (studios aren’t open during the day on the Friday).

The Brochure

The 2020 brochure will be available from late March onwards.

Follow us on social media, sign up to our newsletters to find out when it is available or become a Friend of Spring Fling to get this delivered to your door before anyone else! More information here.
