Frances Ross
I am an artist and maker working with porcelain and mixed media to create sculpture and works at the intersection of art and function. My practice also incorporates public engagement in clay, including development and delivery of the FLOCK project debuting at Spring Fling 2026.

About My Practice
I work with porcelain and other fireable materials. My making processes often involve slip casting with plaster moulds. In some instances, I alter the cast porcelain piece significantly by hand, each piece beginning the same and becoming unique during the making processes. In other cases, the mould making is the longest and most creative part of the work, taking weeks to create the plaster model from which multiples are cast. In my works incorporating metal needles into the clay body, the metal creates new tensions, cracking and fissures, while simultaneously combining with porcelain to tenderly hold the piece together. Every piece records the act of making and the negotiation with the materials.
An important area of my practice incorporates public engagement with clay. I develop projects and workshops to give people opportunities to get clay under their fingernails, use their hands as thinking tools and experience the transformative power of ceramics.
Tools & Materials
This year I am based at the Barwhillanty Estate, on site with the FLOCK installation. Visit the birds, then see my porcelain works highlighting the material’s translucent properties and interaction with light. Plus experiments, sketchbooks and models – besides sculptural and functional works for sale.
