About My Practice
A wood fired kiln that fires to 1300.C plus and also has good turbulence of the wood ash from the firebox which becomes part of the making process. I use this to create bright dynamic pots, glazes that develop fluidity and warm body colours. See a variety of videos on my Instagram @minniwick
Tools & Materials
I throw on a kick wheel, make slabs with a slab roller. I use gas for the biscuit firing where the pots are fired to 850.C and wood fire with mostly larch from a local sawmill, sawn to length and split with an axe. I buy the majority of the materials to make my clay and use locally sourced fireclays, granite sands and grogs. I use wood ash and reed ash for my glazes, the latter gathered from the large beds of reeds nearby. I also use two local glacial clays as slips that are applied and then combed. The porcelain is a commercial clay from France with import tax since Brexit!
