Colin Blanchard

I am a printmaker – working mainly in linocut and screenprint, making editions genuinely limited by the processes of their making. My subjects are mainly wildlife; but I try to go beyond the representational – exploring ways of creating images not possible with other media.

About My Practice

The methods of printing I use are usually quite simple and most were once the contemporary printing technology of their time. Indeed, two of my presses are antique, and even the more ‘modern’ screen printing is now being superseded industrially by digital printing. Simply pressing a piece of paper down on to an inked block or plate or pushing ink through a stencil is all that is required; and yet the continuous development of different craft skills and potential for technical exploration mean that, although I have been making prints for over 50 years, each day in the studio is still an exciting challenge.

My chosen subjects are most often those of ‘traditional’ countryside and wildlife imagery. But I always strive to take my own experience-informed approach (I spent nearly 20 years as a lecturer in Wildlife Management) and go beyond the purely decorative. I will also sometimes incorporate my own poetry as an integral part of some prints.

Tools & Materials

All that said, I will also often use the computer as a graphic compositional tool in the early stages of thought and image manipulation, before continuing with more traditional drawing and tracing. And over the last few years I have managed to convert almost all my processes to modern ‘non-toxic’ materials. Most recent prints are also combinations of different techniques – usually linocut and screen print. Lino cutting is of course a very direct craft process and my screen print stencils, although I can and do, make ‘photo-stencils’ – are most often made directly on the screen.

Spring Fling Activity

Visitors will be invited to ink up and pull a (free) print for themselves on my almost 200 year old ‘Columbian’ press which they will be able to take away with them on the day.
Are you offering anything that might appeal to specific audiences? E.g. children and families, new or different audiences?
I very much encourage whole families (quite safe for age 6 up) to visit the studio and have a go at pulling their own print in order to understand and enjoy the process.
