David Quinn
I am a fine art photographer, originally from Tasmania. My early life revolved mainly around music. Classically trained, I spent most of the 80’s and 90’s as a touring and recording musician before moving to the UK at the end of the 90s.
I was given a camera in 2011 and the lure of the landscape quickly evolved into an obsession. My photography is unashamedly dark and I find a natural beauty in sadness that underpins many of my images.
My early photography mostly consisted of landscape and seascape images of the Scottish Islands & Highlands and the Nordic countries as well as England, Vietnam and Australia. Recent work involves more intimate microscapes – landscapes in miniature as well as more abstract narrative pieces and portraiture.

About My Practice
I work predominantly in the digital domain, although I do also venture into film – especially pinhole photography. I view the camera as a tool and photography as ‘Art’ – I am not overly concerned with representing reality. I make use of ‘in-camera’ techniques to realise my vision. I purposely shoot to end up with images that have more of a painterly feel to them. More recently I have been working with processing techniques using software I have developed myself.
Tools & Materials
I use both digital cameras and film, with film being a combination of SLR and pinhole cameras. I prefer to get the images right ‘in-camera’ as much as possible, but do some post-processing which is always done digitally. More recent work makes use of software that I have written myself.
Depending on the image, I print on archival quality Hahnemuhle Photorag or Canson Rag Photographique papers, or a Baryta paper if I want a less matt surface.

Spring Fling Activity
I am hoping to invite visitors to be photographed during the event to become subjects or models for my newer work.
