Laura Derby
Based in the Artist’s Town of Kirkcudbright, Scotland, my work bridges art, nature, and human connection. Infused with themes of resilience, belonging, and storytelling, my pieces reflect a deep respect for craft as a living link between past, present and future.

About My Practice
I design and make wool pile hand tufted textiles, with functional end use in mind, but pushing the idea of conventional products by applying irregular edged wall hangings, rugs, and to upholster hardwood stools made in collaboration with skilled local wood workers to retain an organic feel and to be as environmentally sustainably as possible.
Tools & Materials
I am in one of WASPS (Workshop and Artists Studio Provision Scotland) smallest colonies. We have 9 open studios this Spring Fling so you will see a diverse range of disciplines and processes. I will demo and explain the use of the usual tufting tools and materials from tufting guns, clippers, shearers, frames involved in heritage carpet making processes and explain the global industry of wool, wood and my choice to source locally.
