Natalie Vardey
I am a full-time jeweller, making my own collections and working to commission. I have always worked in precious metals (recycled wherever possible) and always source ethically mined stones.

About My Practice
My studio is small so I move everything to a different venue for Spring Fling where I set up a replica of my bench and my view to create the feel of my busy days. I make tiny stitches in pure silver, sometime using pearls which has become something of a trademark. I have definitely put in my 10,000 hours at this! When I am not knitting and crocheting with wire I work on all sorts of commissions, create wedding and engagement rings and work on my varied collections. Ideas come from nowhere, or beautiful pieces of architecture, or masterpieces of engineering.
Tools & Materials
When I worked with a blacksmith we realised that most of our tools are the same, just vastly different in scale. Near enough everything I need is within an arm’s stretch. Occasionally I get up to use the rolling mills or draw down some wire, then it’s back to the pin – the piece of wood jewellers work at, centred in the semicircle of a traditional jeweller’s bench. Most of my tools would be recognisable to a jeweller from centuries ago. I do not have lots of extra equipment, just enough to make life a little easier than they had it, including electric lights!
