Sheena McCurrach

I am known as a landscape artist but do many things really.. Throughout my painting career, I have drawn inspiration from the wild and untamed edges of the natural world . I find I have an affinity with the forms, colours and creatures I see almost daily in the places I walk or visit on hiking and walking trips further north. I continue to develop as an artist, currently exploring texture, glazes, collage and printing to express form, lines, complimentary colours and more. I have this year been learning to apply paint with different tools, such as cardboard, sticks, kitchen utensils and bubble- wrap, to break up and add movement and texture to a flat surface .
There is still so much more to learn!

About My Practice

My influences are often visceral, stemming from a reaction to the landscape around me. I find inspiration from the light, and the textures, the lapping of water on the shore, the call of a fox at dusk and all such things. I use photographs and sketches, finding that even the roughest sketch or marks of hills and trees provide the form and suggestion of place that I need to begin to express and share how that view, or creature affected me. The colour palette of Galloway is so rich and varied, especially in winter. The hidden lochs, weathered dykes and damp woods are a constant inspiration.
I am 70 years old now – still enjoying life and painting. If all lives are a journey, then finding peace and fulfilment in the natural world has been a big part of mine.

Tools & Materials

I use a combination of hand-made paper prints, old newspapers, cut out forms, stamps, acrylic paint, watercolour, charcoal, inks and pens to create layered paintings, filled with colour and depth.
