Carolyn Marr
My aim is to make intriguing objects that invite handling. Starting with a simple solid such as a cube, I carve, shape and refine, choosing muted colours and arranging my tactile, abstract forms to catch the light.
Originally from the Isle of Wight, I'm now based in Brampton, Cumbria. I have exhibited widely in the UK and joined the ProSeed Collective exhibition in Venice, 2024. In 2025 I exhibited with ProSeed at Manchester Art Fair and was shortlisted for the New Light Summer Exhibition Award in Leeds.
In 2024 after four years of part-time study, I gained an MA in Contemporary Art and Archaeology from the University of the Highlands and Islands, Orkney.

About My Practice
I take an experimental approach to making, allowing my ideas to develop during the making process. My aim is to make intriguing objects that invite handling. I want people to pick my pieces up and turn them over in their hands, feel the weight of them, their textures, how they fit in the hand. So surface texture and weight are just as important as form and colour.
I love the density and solidity of clay and the slow processes of carving and scraping. These allow time for decision-making while I make, rather than having it all mapped out beforehand.
Doing the Contemporary Art and Archaeology MA at UHI enriched my relationship with materials and to making, and led me to develop more multi-media installation and film work. I love bringing different elements together, often collaborating with others to see what emerges.
Tools & Materials
I work from a very small studio attached to my house, where I have work surface, kiln, wheel and variety of pottery tools, moulds, clays and slips.

Spring Fling Activity
I hope to bring along a couple of small sculptures to be making during the weekend, so visitors will be able to gain some insights into my process.
