Cat Coulson
I spend time in nature reserves and biodiverse habitats, and consider the elements which contribute to them and how we respond to ecocentric environments. I write, photograph and explore, gathering material to make studio paintings that look beyond visual representation to describe a closer experience.

About My Practice
I explore wild places and nature reserves across the region, taking a closer look from within. I consider our relationship with nature and how we experience and respond to it, capturing the contrast between the richness and complexity of natural habitats and how we experience them as calm, reflective spaces. My paintings express the emotional quality such places stimulate in us, I make broad abstractions of visual information which leave space for interpretation; they look beyond visual representation to describe a tangible experience and narrative of place. I concentrate on colour and surface detail, and the aesthetics of transience and shifting atmosphere, depth and mystery, imperfection and patina from weather, decay and growth. Creative practice also includes observational field writing and poetry, which are used as non-visual mediums to stir memory and imagination. I take photographs to record flora, fauna and components of the ecosystems for later identification and research essays, as well as to make fleeting portraits of the intricacy and beauty of the reserves. Recent work has focused on ephemeral wetlands and marginal spaces between loch and land.
Tools & Materials
Sustainable practice is a key focus: I use environmentally responsible materials where possible, from companies that demonstrate a thoughtful environmental ethos. I work predominantly in oils and gouache, I find there is a good consistency between the two mediums in terms of application and colours. For oils on board I like to use an absorbent ground which I make with chalk whiting and marble dust, which also helps to give a more matt finish. I work with Gamblin oil paints, solvent-free medium and odourless mineral spirits, I use a brush-cleaning and solvent recycling system. I work with M Graham gouache, a solvent-free paint which binds pigments with blackberry honey and gum arabic. Brushes are from A.S. Handover and I use papers such as renewable bamboo mixed media paper by Hahnemuhle for gouache work; oil papers from Fabriano and Clairefontaine. Frames and boards for my oil paintings are from Picture Frames of Shaftesbury – the world leaders for FSC Certification – and I use Brampton Framing for my gouache paintings.
