Lesley Smith
My work focuses primarily on still life, often featuring florals and domestic objects. I work mainly in acrylic paint, combining brushwork with stencils and printed elements to create contemporary colourful compositions. Alongside painting, I make lino prints using simplified shapes and strong graphic lines.

About My Practice
I am particularly inspired by artists such as William Scott and Simon Laurie whose work shares an interest in abstraction, simplicity, and the beauty of ordinary things. Like them, I enjoy balancing painterly spontaneity with carefully considered shapes and patterns.
Paper cut-outs are an important part of my process. I use them as a starting point. I often draw with the scissors which allows me to strip objects down to their essentials. I then use the cut outs alongside painted papers to experiment with composition colour and form before translating ideas into paintings or prints. I will usually create a few compositions and manipulate them by sketching and drawing over the image on my iPad, figuring out where to go next. Then when I’m happy I’ll start painting. This approach gives my work its flattened planes, playful lively distortions and arrangements of everyday objects.
My aim is to celebrate the charm of the everyday, creating work that feels both contemporary and approachable in both paint and print.
Tools & Materials
I work in my home studio in an attic room with a great light and a view along St Mary Street, Kirkcudbright. It contains all of the objects and collections that form my subject matter, mainly vintage finds and charity-shop treasures. My studio space is filled with several tables cluttered with different media. One with collage materials- painted papers, scissors and cut out shapes another with printing presses and rolled out ink and another with paints, brushes and canvas panels. I move between all three, each informing the other.
