About My Practice
Steeped in history and legend, our ancient trees and woodlands throughout Britain are a remnant of the old ways in which humans cohabited with nature, working trees, woodland and livestock through sustainable practices.
Trees are the longest living examples of a complex natural world. Just like the stratification of rock, or the blue memory of a glacier, a tree too wears the passage of time. Etched into their surface is a diary of existence, simultaneously living and dead as its form flows through growth and decay.
The work is made ’En Plein Air’, considering an economy of mark whilst deploying the paint sculpturally to best describe the tree’s architecture, how its weight sits and shifts through time. Through experiential learning, moving through and surveying this environment I examine the vital features which are evident in our ancient wood; gnarled burrs, fresh epicormic shoots, red rot heartwood, corpse green lichens, moist mosses and fruiting fungi. Each painting investigates a tree as a living landscape in its own right.
Tools & Materials
I work on location as well as within my studio. My set up varies depending on the logistics of the task. On long treks a lightweight quick fire day bag with sketchbooks and water based mediums, for mountain ascents, remote glens and coasts will do. This allows me to travel light, work fast and loose over many works.
When working somewhere familiar or within close distance, generally I will take oils out. With two lightweight Strada Easels, a limited palette of between four and seven colours, a painting develops, wet into wet, in about two hours. I use an eco friendly painting medium, but the oils remain hand made and traditional, so every care is taken on location to be respectful to the landscape when using oils.
Back in the studio, where ideas develop and percolate from these field studies, the set up can be far more fluid and complex. Large scale canvas is stretched, sized and primed ready to paint on. The equipment scales up, to accommodate a painting made from the whole body, rather than limitations of the wrist. Large glass palettes, oils, spirits, resins, waxes, hog hairs and synthetic brushes all expand upon and diversify the painting language that can be achieved within the comfort of a studio.
