Suzanne Stuart Davies
Ideas for new work arise from maps and walks in Northern lands.
Traditional agricultural buildings are disappearing – converted or deserted – but the textures of these time-honoured structures, stone and wood and paint, still attract the eye in the landscapes of Galloway and Westmorland.

About My Practice
Ambivalence and chance – the way the light changes, the way the eye scans and collects information fascinates. My paintings are responses to a delight in things seen. In some there is a touch of Surrealism, hopefully evoking a sense of the poetry of place.
Tools & Materials
Pencil and watercolour are liberating – there can be unintended consequences. Further studies and sketches narrow down ideas before oil paint is applied to canvas or board with brushes and knives. I make notes and refer constantly to the work of poets and painters from the past and the present – favourites include T.S. Elliot and Kathleen Jamie and among painters – John Piper and others of the mid 20th century particularly. Catalogues from the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh highlight current aspects of painting.
