Chris Renshaw
I am a blacksmith who specialises in hand-forging knives for every application. My preference is to forge chef’s knives, but I can apply the same process and diligence to other types of knives such as bushcrafting or camping knives.

About My Practice
I work with a variety of steel types. Typically I use high-carbon knife steel, but I also work with stainless steel and pattern-welded (Damascus) steel.
The knives I typically make range in size from 3” bladed paring knives all the way to full size 8” bladed chef’s knives but I welcome commissions for bespoke knives.
Recently, we have been focusing on developing new forging techniques in order to new and different pattern welded steel. Traditionally, steel is worked at around 1100 degrees celcius, but the new speciality steels require a cold forging technique where the steel is worked in a traditional manner, just without the fire. This gives a very detailed patterning to the profile of the knife. We are also incorporating copper and brass in the steel billets in a process called Mokume Game, which gives a distinctive and beautiful pattern to the knife.
I also offer a unique service where I invite couples who are due to get married to come and join me in the forge and I will mentor them while they hand-forge their own knife to cut their wedding cake with. We then colour-match the handle of the knife to the colour theme of the wedding.
In order to keep this historic artisan craft alive, I offer 1 and 2 day knife-making experiences where people can join me in the forge and try their hand at blacksmithing and make their own knife, to encourage more people to take up this craft. The knife-making experience is a great gift and I offer gift vouchers that can be booked and paid for in advance.
Tools & Materials
Typically I use high carbon knife steel, but I also work with stainless steel and pattern welded (Damascus) steel. Recently, we have been working with copper and brass laminated in the knife blades in a Mokume Game style.
