Sally Jennings
I am an early career artist based in Glasgow with a practice that spans painting, printmaking and installation work. In 2022 I graduated from The Glasgow School of Art and have since exhibited in Glasgow, Kirkudbright, and have had my paintings featured in the set dressing of ITV’s drama ‘Payback’.

About My Practice
I draw much of my inspiration from philosophy and ideas around how we move through and experience the world around us. My paintings are inspired by the small quotidian moments, fleeting fragments of emotion, thought, movement, that are often overlooked. My aim is to create a space and surface which encourages slowness and attention, where the viewer can move through the image and release an assumption, feeling or experience, taking a moment to meditate.
When painting, I pay rigorous attention to formal elements of a surface such as colour, shape, balance, depth, and composition. By working in a non-figurative format and using markers of objecthood such as painting the canvas edges, my works question the nature of objects and materiality, as well as their spatial and temporal prominence.
Tools & Materials
I work from my Glasgow flat, lucky to be constantly surrounded by my materials and work. This allows me to coexist with each piece and spend time with the surface, colour and forms of the paintings on a daily basis. I can add to the paintings gradually, sometimes working quickly and expressively, and other times just sitting with them and searching for which colours or marks are needed next.
I work with oil paint, employing a unique process of layering color to obscure imagery and text to varying levels of intensity to create texturally rich surfaces. I use non-traditional tools such as squeegees, pencils and knives to scrape into and layer paint across the surface of the paintings, as well as using oil sticks and brushes to create juxtapositions between soft, gentle, and more agressive, emotive mark making.
