About My Practice
It all starts with images of surfaces taken while on the move – crumbling concrete, cracked and flaking paint, rust, scuzzy metal – often using my mobile phone, hence digital art on the run.
These are my “palette”. They form only the start of a process … much of the “magic” happens in Photoshop as combining multiple images together, selecting parts of one, overlaying others until an abstract image emerges. This can be a process of serendipity when one treatment produces an unexpected effect and the work changes direction.
I like to work from real surfaces because in this way, my images retain an organic, “memory”, of the real world which provides a hook for the viewer’s imagination.
Often, I will extend the journey and move to a more traditional analogue approach using mixed-media; I will take a print of the digital work and then apply a wide range of materials and techniques depending on the intended final result.
Tools & Materials
Acrylics, oil stick, water colours, charcoal, chalks, textured papers, drawing inks, gold and silver leaf; all have been used in additional “mark making”.
