Jane Fraser

I am a wood artist who creates turned forms enhanced with freehand pyrography. Inspired by nature and a love of drawing, my work celebrates the natural character and individuality of each piece of wood.

About My Practice

My practice combines woodturning and freehand pyrography to create unique pieces of artwork. I form each piece on the lathe, allowing the grain and natural features of the wood to influence the final shape. I then draw directly onto the surface using pyrography, adding detail and patterns inspired by nature. I’m particularly influenced by organic forms, seasonal change, and the quiet beauty found in natural materials. Every piece reflects both the character of the wood and my own creative response to it.

Tools & Materials

I work from two workshops: one houses my lathes, bandsaw, pyrography equipment, and hand tools, where all shaping, turning, and detailed work takes place. The second is a dedicated studio space for displaying finished work. I use mainly locally sourced wood, including fallen trees and timber from Logan Botanic Garden. Working with wood that often has a history and strong natural character is central to my practice, and I aim to use each piece thoughtfully and sustainably.
