Heather Armstrong
Now retired from a career in medicine I seem to have become an artist, ceramics my preferred medium. Working with clay allows me to combine a professionally ingrained need to be in control with the creative challenge of engaging with a material that has its own quirks.
I have a small studio space (half a garage) at my home where I enjoy the convenience of dipping in and out as my process requires.

About My Practice
I make sculptural ceramic vessels and forms using clay hand building techniques; pinching, coil-building, slab-building, imprinting. At times I will have sketched my ideas in advance but more commonly new work evolves as I build, creative choices being made intuitively. A build is complete when it is refined in form and texture. The decorative finish of the work is achieved by smoke-firing, the transformative alchemy of fire and smoke on the unglazed ceramic surface.
My influences are from the natural world – the big stuff; the mountains, the sea, the rocks, the rivers and glaciers. It’s the energy in the wind and the water. It’s the colour and flow of the seasons. My ceramics are of the earth.
Tools & Materials
The clay I use is largely commercial and I like to experiment with varieties that have different properties. When the opportunity arises I will gather wild clay from the environment.
To model the clay I use my hands and small selection of tools, often improvised. I am fortunate to have a labour saving slab roller and my work is bisque fired in an electric kiln. I do not use glazes. My work is predominantly finished using the smoke-firing technique for which I use a galvanised metal dustbin. I burn a variety of locally sourced combustible materials including wood shavings, seaweed, banana skins, nut shells and other kitchen and garden waste. The addition of chemical oxides can also influence the colour variations achieved.
Once fired and finished, the application of a beeswax polish helps to define the colour and texture of the work. Each piece is entirely individual.
