Korey Patterson

I’m Korey, I’ve been illustrating professionally for about two and a half years now, but I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. I draw people mainly, as I think they’re the most interesting subject to capture on paper. People’s actions and expressions are intriguing to solve when sketching them for the first time, and I love to sit at my desk at home and try and figure each one out, and let that guide the rest of the drawing until it tells a small story. I sketch with whatever pencil I can find and also use pen and ink on pieces I feel need it. Sometime with my cartoon works, I like to add watercolours for shading too, and I love to come up with characters and scenarios for some personal illustration work.

About My Practice

I’m completely self taught and always willing to learn and improve to expand my current capabilities. I’m eclectic with my tools, and I typically use whatever pencil I have at hand, and just try to keep it sharp. I’ve invested in some ink pens, which I also like to sketch with when I’m feeling confident. I’m influenced by the great American mid-century illustrators like Albert Dorne, Austin Briggs, Bob Peak, and Norman Rockwell, as well as political cartoons, with their simplistic colour, shapes and humour.

Tools & Materials

I work at my home in Thornhill, in my spare room sat at my wooden desk, just in front of the window. I have a table top drawing board and a light box, that all rests among a nest of paper, sketchbooks, trinkets and stationary. I like a cozy set up and will often use music to help inspire and motivate my working. I have pencils, charcoal, watercolours and ink brush pens that all sit waiting to be used, I have my favourites, but I usually have them kept in my pencil case right next to my right hand.
