Laura Derby / Rugaura

I create heirloom-quality decorative textiles using wool, transforming them into functional rugs and stools. Native to Galloway and with a background in textiles and hand tufting I blend elements of nature with indigenous motifs creating a vibrant, colourful style spanning applied and visual art.

About My Practice

Using photography to paint to Procreate, I develop my ideas into colourful, functional wool pile textiles and upholster stools in collaboration with skilled local woodworkers. Concerned with our environment, I work with others towards a better future and weave links between art, nature and humanity into my work. I love that my works are multipurpose, useable furnishings for people’s homes.

Tools & Materials

Seeing my purpose-built frames, tufting guns, shearing tools, finishing materials enables visitors a much clearer understanding of my process and all that's involved. Also interesting for people is my creative process from idea to design development which I am happy to share when time allows.
